My Cheering Moments

QuoteSource

"You take your own hostage," one of them said to him. "Leave the others ..."

"No way!" said Harry furiously - but only two large bubbles came out.

"Your task is to retrieve your own friend ... leave the others ..."

"She's my friend too!" Harry yelled, gesturing toward Hermione, an enormous silver bubble emerging soundlessly from his lips. "And I don't want them to die either!"

Book 4, Pages 499-500

Goblet of Fire, Chapter 26, "The Second Task"

... an old man Harry had seen only in a dream was now pushing himself out of the end of the wand just as Cedric had done... and his ghost, or his shadow, or whatever it was, fell next to Cedric's, and surveyed Harry and Voldemort, and the golden web, and the connected wands, with mild surprise, leaning on his walking stick...

"He was a real wizard, then?" the old man said, his eyes on Voldemort. "Killed me, that one did. ... You fight him, boy. ..."

"Excellent," whispered Ron, as they sat down in their usual seats. "Let's see Umbridge get what she deserves."

Professor McGonagall marched into the room without giving the slightest indication that she knew Professor Umbridge was there.
...
"Hem, hem," said Professor Umbridge.

"Yes?" said Professor McGonagall, turning round, her eyebrows so close together they seemed to form one long, severe line.

"I was just wondering, Professor, whether you received my note telling you of the date and time of your inspec -"

"Obviously I received it, or I would have asked you what you are doing in my classroom," said Professor McGonagall, turning her back firmly on professor Umbridge.

Professor Umbridge gave her most pronounced cough yet.

"May I offer you a cough drop, Dolores?" Professor McGonagall asked curtly, without looking at Professor Umbridge.

"Oh no, thank you very much," said Umbridge with that simpering laugh Harry hated so much. "I just wondered whether I could make the teensiest interruption, Minvera?"
...
"I was just wondering whether Mr. Potter has quite the temperament for an Auror?" said Professor Umbridge sweetly.
...
" - are you quite sure you wouldn't like a cough drop, Dolores?"
...
"I'm terribly sorry to have to contradict you, Minerva, but as you will see from my note, Harry has been achieving very poor results in his classes with me -"

"I should have made my meaning plainer," said Professor McGonagall, turning at last to look Umbridge directly in the eyes. "He has achieved high marks in all Defense Against the Dark Arts tests set by a competent teacher."

Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 29, "Career Advice"

But nobody was paying the slightest attention to their star charts anymore: Jets of red light were still flying beside Hagrid's cabin, yet somehow they seemed to be bouncing off him. He was still upright and still, as far as Harry could see, fighting. Cries and yells echoed across the grounds; a man yelled, "Be reasonable, Hagrid!" and Hagrid roared, "Reasonable be damned, yeh won' take me like this Dawlish!"

Harry could see the tiny outline of Fang, attempting to defend Hagrid, leaping at the wizards surrounding him until a Stunning Spell caught him and he fell to the ground. Hagrid gave a howl of fury, lifted the culprit bodily from the ground, and threw him: The man flew what looked like ten feet and did not get up again. Hermione gasped, both hands over her mouth; Harry looked around at Ron and saw that he too was looking scared. None of them had ever seen Hagrid in a real temper before...

Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 31, "O.W.L.s"

"Look!" squealed Parvati, who was leaning over the parapet and pointing to the foot of the castle where the front doors seemed to have opened again; more light had spilled out onto the dark lawn and a single long black shadow was now rippling across the lawn.

"Now, really!" said Professor Tofty anxiously. "Only sixteen minutes left, you know!"

But nobody paid him the slightest attention: They were watching the person now sprinting toward the battle beside Hagrid's cabin.

"How dare you!" the figure shouted as she ran. "How dare you!"

"It's McGonagall!" whispered Hermione.

"Leave him alone! Alone, I say!" said Professor McGonagall's voice through the darkness. "On what grounds are you attacking him?" ...

Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 31, "O.W.L.s"

"You two," she went on, gazing down at Fred and George, "are about to learn what happens to wrongdoers in my school."

"You know what?" said Fred. "I don't think we are."

"STOP THEM!" shrieked Umbridge, but it was too late. As the Inquisitorial Squad closed in, Fred and George kicked off from the floor, shooting fifteen feet into the air, the iron peg swinging dangerously below. Fred looked across the hall at the poltergeist bobbing on his level above the crowd.

"Giver her hell from us, Peeves."

And Peeves, whom Harry had never seen take an order from a student before, swept his belled hat from his head and sprang to a salute as Fred and George wheeled about to tumultuous applause from the students below and sped out of the open front doors into the glorious sunset.

"Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger," Harry said very quickly, "Ginny Weasley, Neville Longbottom, Luna Lovegood... We're here to save someone, unless your Ministry can do it first!"

Half a dozen badges slid out of the metal chute... he glanced at the topmost one.

Voldemort's Name

QuoteSource
"Ask for Tom the barman - easy enough to remember, as he shares your name -"

Riddle gave an irritable twitch, as though trying to displace an irksome fly.

"You dislike the name 'Tom'?"

"There are a lot of Toms," muttered Riddle.

"So, Tom... to what do I owe the pleasure?"

Voldemort did not answer at once, but merely sipped his wine.

"They do not call me 'Tom' anymore," he said. "These days I am known as -"

"I know what you are known as," said Dumbledore, smiling pleasantly. "But to me, I'm afraid, you will always be Tom Riddle. It is one of the irritating things about old teachers. I am afraid that they never quite forget their charges' youthful beginnings."
Book 6, Page 442

Half Blood Prince, Chapter 20, "Lord Voldemort's Request"
"My dear Professor, surely a sensible person like yourself can call him by his name? All this 'You-Know-Who' nonsense - for eleven years I have been trying to persuade people to call him by his proper name: Voldemort." Professor McGonagall flinched, but Dumbledore, who was unsticking two lemon drops, seemed not to notice. "It all gets so confusing if we keep saying 'You-Know-Who.' I have never seen any reason to be frightened of saying Voldemort's name."Book 1, Page 11

"Sir?" said Harry. "I've been thinking ... Sir-even if the Stone's gone, Vol-, I mean, You-Know-Who -"

Hermione went very red, put down her hand, and stared at the floor with her eyes full of tears. ... and Ron, who told Hermione she was a know-it-all at least twice a week, said loudly, "You asked us a question, and she knows the answer! Why ask if you don't want to be told?"

Today - July 20, 2007

The day before Book 7 is released:

  • Excitedly waiting for the delivery truck tomorrow.
  • Instituted a lockdown on all sites, televisions, radios, etc.. that may have spoilers.
  • Cleaning the house to get ready for major blocks of reading time. Listening to Harry Potter on audio books while I clean.
  • Warned others I will be under a self-imposed communications blackout for the weekend.
  • Coming up with ideas of mindless activities I can do to intersperse with reading - with the intent to a) slow myself down and not gulp the whole book down in 1 or 2 days and b) allow myself time to process what I'm reading during the reading and not after. Laundry..., cleaning ..., going out to eat ..., walking ...
  • Trying to determine which last few posts are worthy enough to finish and move from "draft" to "published" status before I shut down all posting tonight. Trying to pick the most appropriate last, last post.

What are Voldemort's Plans?

QuoteSource
Voldemort and Immortality
Voldemort's Request to Teach at Hogwarts

Half-Blood Prince, Chapter 13, "The Secret Riddle"
"So what does Dumbledore reckon he's planning?"

"Well, firstly, he wants to build up his army again," said Sirius.
...You heard him planning to recruit the giants; well, they'll be just one group he's after. He's certainly not going to try and take on the Ministry of Magic with only a dozen Death Eaters."

Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 5, "The Order of the Phoenix"
"He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has now been joined by those of his followers who broke out of Azkaban in January," said Fudge, speaking more and more rapidly and twirling his bowler so fast that it was a lime-green blur. Voldemort's Request

QuoteSource
..."Hardly anyone knew of it at the time - I was one of the few in whom the then headmaster confided - but Voldemort first approached Professor Dippet and asked whether he could remain at Hogwarts as a teacher."

"He wanted to stay here? Why?" asked Harry, more amazed still.

"I believe he had several reasons, though he confided none of them to Professor Dippet," said Dumbledore. "Firstly, and very importantly, Voldemort was, I believe, more attached to this school than he has ever been to a person. Hogwarts was where he had been happiest; the first and only place he had felt at home."
...
"Secondly, the castle is a stronghold of ancient magic. Undoubtedly Voldemort had penetrated many more of its secrets than most of the students who pass through the place, but he may have felt that there were still mysteries to unravel, stores of magic to tap.

"And thirdly, as a teacher he would have had great power and influence over young witches and wizards. Perhaps he had gained the idea from Professor Slughorn, the teacher with whom he was on best terms, who had demonstrated how influential a role a teacher can play. I do not imagine for an instant that Voldemort envisaged spending the rest of his life at Hogwarts, but I do think that he saw it as a useful recruiting ground, and a place where he might begin to build himself an army."
Book 6, Pages 431-432

Half-Blood Prince, Chapter 20, "Lord Voldemort's Request"
"Let us speak openly. Why have you come here tonight, surrounded by henchmen, to request a job we both know you do not want?"

Voldemort looked coldly surprised. "A job I do not want? On the contrary, Dumbledore, I want it very much."

"Oh, you want to come back to Hogwarts, but you do not want to teach any more than you wanted to when you were eighteen. What is it you're after, Tom? Why not try an open request for once?"

Voldemort sneered. "If you do not want to give me a job -"

"Of course I don't," said Dumbledore. And I don't think for a moment you expected me to."
Book 6, Page 445

Half-Blood Prince, Chapter 20, "Lord Voldemort's Request"
"Do you think that's why he really wanted to come back to Hogwarts, sir?" said Harry. "To try and find something from one of the other founders?"

"My thoughts precisely," said Dumbledore. "But unfortunately, that does not advance us much further, for he was turned away, or so I believe, without the chance to search the school."

The Flying Motorcycle

QuoteSource
A low rumbling sound had broken the silence around them. It grew steadily louder as they looked up and down the street for some sign of a headlight; it swelled to a roar as they both looked up at the sky - and a huge motorcycle fell out of the air and landed on the road in front of them.
...
"Hagrid," said Dumbledore, sounding relieved. "At last. And where did you get that motorcycle?"

"Borrowed it, Professor Dumbledore, sir," said the giant, climbing carefully off the motorcycle as he spoke. "Young Sirius Black lent it to me."
...
"Yeah," said Hagrid in a very muffled voice, "I'll be takin' Sirius his bike back. G'night, Professor McGonagall - Professor Dumbledore, sir."

Wiping his streaming eyes on his jacket sleee, Hagrid swung himself onto the motorcycle and kicked the engine into life; with a roar it rose into the air and off into the night.

"I shoulda known there was somethin' fishy goin' on then. He loved that motorbike, what was he givin' it ter me for? Why wouldn' he need it anymore? Fact was, it was too easy ter trace."

Kingsley tipped Harry an enormous wink...

On the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Two-Disc Special Edition) (Harry Potter 1) DVD there is a Photo Gallery (via "The Library") where I found this artist's concept drawing of Sirius's Flying Motorcycle sitting beside Hagrid's hut. This artist, however, may not have known anything more than any of us. The films are not generally considered canon. (An excellent discussion of canon can be found on HP-Lexicon's Overview of Sources.)

  • HP Lexicon's Table of Edits to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone which includes the change from "I'll be takin' Sirius his bike back." to "I best get this bike away." This poster had a good rationale for the change on the mugglenet forums. (i.e. Dumbledore, who testified that Sirius was the Potter's secret-keeper, would have not let Hagrid just ride off to give the bike back to the apparent traitor.)

    Handwriting in the Potions Book

I thought this table was really going to demonstrate that there were several different sets of handwriting in the Potions book but I was wrong:

    QuoteSource
    Scribbled

It was really very irritating, having to try and decipher the directions under all the stupid scribbles of the previous owner, who for some reason had taken issue with the order to cut up the sopophorous bean and had written in the alternativer instructions:

    Half-Blood Prince, Chapter 9, "The Half-Blood Prince"
The more Harry pored over the book, the more he realized how much was in there, not only the handy hints and shortcuts on potions that were earning him such a glowing reputation wiht Slughorn, but also the imaginative little jinxes and hexes scribbled in the margins, which Harry was sure, judging by the crossings-out and revisions, that the Prince had invented himself.Book 6, Page 238

Half-Blood Prince, Chapter 12, "Silver and Opals"

Sitting up in bed, Harry turned the book sideways so as to examine more closely the scribbled instructions for a spell that seemed to have caused the Prince some trouble. There were many crossings-out and alterations, but finally, crammed into a corner of the page, the scribble:

    Scribbled and Cramped

Harry bent low to retrieve the book, and as he did so, he saw something scribbled along the bottom of the back cover in the same small, cramped handwriting as the instructions that had won him his bottle of Felix Felicis, now safely hidden inside a pair of socks in his trunk upstairs.

The Gryffindors watched fearfully. The Slytherins looked excited. Snape picked up Trevor the toad in his left hand and dipped a small spoon into Neville's potion, which was now green. He trickled a few drops down Trevor's throat.

There was a moment of hushed silence, in which Trevor gulped; then there was a small pop, and Trevor the tadpole was wriggling in Snape's palm.

Why make Peter Pettigrew the Secret-Keeper?

    QuoteSource

"James Potter told Dumbledore that Black would die rather than tell where they were, that Black was planning to go into hiding himself ... and yet, Dumbledore remained worried. I remember him offering to be the Potters' Secret-Keeper himself."

"He suspected Black?" gasped Madam Rosmerta.

"He was sure that somebody close to the Potters had been keeping You-Know-Who informed of their movements," said Professor McGonagall darkly. "Indeed, he had suspected for some time that someone on our side had turned traitor and was passing a lot of information to You-Know-Who."

He lowered himself through the hole until he was hanging on by his fingertips.
    ...
And Harry let go. Cold, damp air rushed past him as he fell down, down, down...
    ...
The distant music stopped. There was a loud bark from the dog, but Hermione had already jumped. She landed on Harry's other side.
"We must be miles under the school," she said.

He lowered himself slowly into the pipe, then let go.

It was like rushing down an endless, slimy, dark slide. He could see more pipes branching off in all directions, but none as large as theirs, which twisted and turned, sloping steeply downward, and he knew that he was falling deeper below the school than even the dungeons.
    ...
"We must be miles under the school," said Harry, his voice echoing in the black tunnel.

"Under the lake, probably," said Ron, squinting around at the dark, slimy walls.

Humble Prediction - We have still to see a secret room in Hogwarts related to Gryffindor/Fire.

    UPDATE - 7/19/07:
Here are two guesses on the location of the secret Gryffindor room:

Guess #1) Through the fireplace in the North Tower (Trelawney's classrom). This ties in with Gryffindors, Towers and fire as well as the mention of the fireplace in her classroom.

Guess #2) Through the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom - thus explaining another reason Voldemort wanted the Defense Against the Dark Arts job.

    The Elements in Gringotts

Harry, who had expected more marble, was surprised. They were in a narrow stone passageway lit with flaming torches.
    ...
Harry's eyes stung as the cold air rushed past them, but he kept them wide open. Once, he thought he saw a burst of fire at the end of a passage and twisted around to see if it was a dragon, but too late - they plunged even deeper, passing an underground lake where huge stalactites and stalagmites grew from the celing and floor.

    The Elements Quote:
JKR: Probably. I hear you. It is the tradition to have four houses, but in this case, I wanted them to correspond roughly to the four elements. So Gryffindor is fire, Ravenclaw is air, Hufflepuff is earth, and Slytherin is water, hence the fact that their common room is under the lake. So again, it was this idea of harmony and balance, that you had four necessary components and by integrating them you would make a very strong place. But they remain fragmented, as we know.

What did Flamel and Dumbledore Work on?

Given their ages, it appears that Nicolas Flamel created the Sorcerer's Stone long before Dumbledore was born:

Albus Dumbledore150Question: How old is old in the wizarding world, and how old are Professors Dumbledore and McGonagall?

J.K. Rowling responds: Dumbledore is a hundred and fifty, and Professor McGonagall is a sprightly seventy. Wizards have a much longer life expectancy than Muggles. (Harry hasn't found out about that yet.)
    JKRowling Quote

Yet, Dumbledore worked on alchemy with Nicolas Flamel:
Dumbledore is particularly famous for his defeat of the dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945, for the discovery of the twelve uses of dragon's blood, and his work on alchemy with his partner, Nicolas Flamel.

    Teach us something please,
Whether we be old and bald
    Or young with scabby knees,

    With some interesting stuff,

"Well," he said in a measured voice, "I suppose...because of you."

"Don't you have a go at my mother," snapped Seamus.

"He's having a go at my mother!" Seamus yelled.

"What?" said Ron. "Harry wouldn't do that - we met your mother, we liked her..."

"That's before she started believing every word the stinking Daily Prophet writes about me! said Harry at the top of his voice.

"Anyone else's parents got a problem with Harry?" he said aggressively.

    What did Lupin Discover?

    QuoteSource

Lupin had pulled out a book and was reading, Sirius stared around at the students milling over the grass, looking rather haughty and bored, but very handsomely so.
    ...
"I'm bored," said Sirius. "Wish it was full moon."

"You might," said Lupin darkly from behind his book. "We've still got Transfiguration, if you're bored you could test me. ... Here." He held out his book.

Sirius snorted. "I don't need to look at that rubbish, I know it all."
    ...
Snape was on his feet again, and was stowing the O.W.L. paper in his bag. As he emerged from the shadows of the bushes and set off across the grass, Sirius and James stood up. Lupin and Wormtail remained sitting: Lupin was still staring down at his book, though his eyes were not moving and a faint frown line had appeared between his eyebrows. Wormtail was looking from Sirius and James to Snape with a look of avid anticipation on his face.
